With funding from NOAA Fisheries, SWIA employs staff and provides program support for the Reserve Stewardship Program.  Trash and sediment originating in Mexico is a major problem for the TRNERR’s habitat. It requires constant vigilance and funding to prevent the Reserved from being overwhelmed by trash and debris caused by cross-border run off.

This grant partially funds the Stewardship Coordinator and the Tijuana River Action Month (TRAM), an annual bi-national cleanup from mid-September through mid-October. Teams of volunteers from both Tijuana and the U.S. participate.  Professional contractors conduct trash and debris cleanup and removal within ecologically sensitive areas of the Reserve. Purchases of trash booms and replacement parts for trash booms in those areas are also supported by under this grant.
